The thought of God turning from the Son as He dies on the cross can be difficult to process and understand. What did Jesus really mean by it? How is it that the New Testament says that Jesus “became sin for us”? When misunderstood, we can end up with sentimental feelings at best – or heresy at worst.
But the truth is that Christ being truly forsaken as He carries our sin is directly tied to our salvation. If we fail to understand how Jesus became sin for us, we will never grasp the truth that goes with it – His righteousness became ours. Did God look away because He couldn’t bear to see His Son dying a gruesome death on a cross, or was it something more?
