The rebuilt temple during Jesus’s day was beyond impressive, covering over twice as much real estate as the first and some of the stones used in construction were 5 tons – in some cases up to 100 tons. This building at the center of religious life seemed to be built to last.
But it didn’t. It was destroyed stone by stone & the religious system that built it was destroyed as well. It was unthinkable for the disciples, who believed Jesus was going to set up an earthly kingdom.
